In 2017, our family suffered the tragic loss of my stepdaughter to an act of violence. This profoundly shifted my perspective on life, igniting a journey of deep learning, healing, and compassion. Today, our young adult and teenage community grapples with unprecedented challenges, amplified by the influence of technology in their daily lives. This generation is having unprecedented rates of mental health struggles. It is crucial that all departments of our local government come together like never before to provide support to our teens from every angle. This requires a leader that can unify and encourage collective support, protection, and effective solutions for our youth. We must hold teens and young adults accountable in small actions to prevent them from escalating into larger problems. Prioritizing early intervention for mental health and behavioral issues is essential. As a community, we must model the values we wish to instill in our youth, fostering unity and kindness. With nearly 30% of our community under the age of 18, providing nurturing support coupled with accountability is paramount, nurturing intrinsic motivation for teenagers to do the right thing and exercise self control.
Our growing town takes immense pride in being consistently recognized as the second safest city in the country. It is vital that our first responders continue to be meticulously trained and equipped to perform their duties with excellence. We must recruit the best individuals and invest significantly in those who risk their lives and leave their families everyday to ensure the safety and well-being of our family's lives. Our community’s commitment to supporting first responders must remain unwavering to ensure that Gilbert remains a safe community.
Property rights are a cornerstone of our community, and it's essential that they are respected without infringing upon the rights of others. Many residents have voiced concerns about the growing number of apartments, these concerns reflect a broader issue of density imbalance. While growth is inevitable, it must be managed responsibly to ensure our infrastructure can support it and that we maintain the quality of life for all residents. Attracting long-term stakeholders with a vested interest in our town's future success is crucial. We must strive to preserve our town's culture amidst growth, ensuring it remains a community deeply rooted in community and family values.
The Gilbert Town Council is considering an increase in sales tax and is on the verge of approving the highest property tax in the town's history. To avoid implementing a primary property tax, we must make tough budget choices and base decisions on future revenue and sustainability. Although Gilbert currently has lower taxes than neighboring regions, it is crucial to maintain this advantage. As our town nears full build-out within the next decade, we will heavily rely on sales tax revenue to meet our budgetary needs. Therefore, we must be innovative with our budget, carefully evaluating the return on investment (ROI) and necessity of each project. Large-scale projects that do not offer substantial ROI, such as the proposed $7 million education center at the Riparian, should be removed from the budget and reconsidered at a future time. With inflation high and housing affordability at its worst in 40 years, every household is cutting back on expenses. The residents are asking Gilbert Town leadership to follow suit. We must carefully evaluate necessary expenditures and defer non-essential and less urgent needs
We must seek out opportunities to attract new businesses that share our values and vision for Gilbert, and streamline the processes to help bring these businesses into our town. We need to be innovative in creating and growing new revenue streams that will carry us through buildout and beyond. The cost of doing business should be fair and equitable to business and consumers without undue costs being shouldered by the taxpayers of Gilbert.
The northwest corridor of Gilbert is the oldest area of our town, with infrastructure nearing the end of its life and in dire need of a comprehensive redevelopment plan. As an employment district, this area requires development that fosters culture, job creation, and economic growth to ensure our future sustainability. Economic districts have the potential to significantly boost a town's revenue and ease the burden of funding the town's budget from residents' taxes alone. Well-planned developments can generate millions in annual income through increased business activity, higher property values, and tax revenue. I am passionate about initiating and advancing this redevelopment plan and look forward to being part of its transformative development while ensuring it aligns with Gilbert's culture. By revitalizing this corridor, we can create a vibrant, thriving district that will benefit our community for generations to come.
